Head of nuclear watchdog to visit Iran

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) - The head of a nuclear watchdog agency is traveling to Iran this weekend to discuss the country's recently revealed uranium enrichment facility, a spokesman said Saturday.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will discuss the uranium facility with Iranian officials, an agency spokesman said.

The spokesman would not say whether ElBaradei would visit the uranium facility or specify whom the director is meeting with.

Iran has said it plans to cooperate with the U.N. nuclear agency and will invite representatives of the body to visit the facility.

Iran sent shock waves through the international community last week when Tehran wrote a letter to the IAEA revealing the existence of a nuclear enrichment facility near the city of Qom.

The admission prompted U.S. President Barack Obama and the leaders of Britain and France to publicly chide the Islamic republic and threaten further sanctions.

Iran says its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes, but many in the international community have accused the country of trying to develop a nuclear weapons capability.
