Source: Safe in slain couple's home contained $100,000

PENSACOLA, Florida (CNN) - A safe found in the home of a slain Florida couple known for adopting special-needs children contained about $100,000, a source familiar with the investigation told CNN late Tuesday.

The safe is the second one belonging to the Beulah, Florida, home of Byrd and Melanie Billings. The source told CNN the suspects in the shooting deaths believed the safe was the mother lode of valuables at the house, but were unable to get into it.

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan would not confirm that, however, telling CNN he was "not at liberty to address that issue."

"I can only confirm the items we know were removed from the Billings home," Morgan said - a small safe that contained prescription medication, family documents and some jewelry, and a briefcase that contained nothing significant.

The small safe was found in the back yard of a woman who is charged with being an accessory after the fact to the Billings slayings. Seven men face murder charges in the killings, and one of those suspects identified another as the lone gunman in the case, according to court documents released Tuesday.
