Aftershock strikes off New Zealand

(CNN) - A 5.8-magnitude aftershock struck Wednesday off the coast of New Zealand's South Island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which measures earthquakes around the world.

It occured about 20 minutes after the initial quake which measured 7.8 in magnitude and prompted a tsunami warning. The epicenter of both quakes were in the same region.
