Cranes collapse at site of fatal bridge accident in India

Posted: 03:34 AM ET

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) - At least three cranes collapsed at a New Delhi metro rail construction site Monday, a day after a subway bridge collapsed at the same location and killed at least five people.

Monday's accident happened during clearing operations, injuring at least four people, according to CNN sister network CNN-IBN.

In addition to the five deaths, 15 people were injured in Sunday's collapse of a partly built bridge, officials said.

The collapse occurred when a metal support gave way, said Anuj Dayal, spokesman for Delhi Metro Rail Corp.

In the Indian capital, notorious for its poor traffic management, construction on metro lines has been frenzied as the city prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

New Delhi launched its metro system six years ago, a project that cut through India's bureaucratic red tape, which usually holds back big infrastructure programs. But the metro has a spotty safety record.

Part of a another bridge being built to extend the rail system collapsed in October, pinning a bus and killing its driver.
