Peru president shakes up Cabinet

Posted: 10:33 PM ET

LIMA, Peru (CNN) - Peruvian President Alan Garcia named a new prime minister and replaced several Cabinet members Saturday in a major shake-up after June 5 demonstrations left at least 34 police and protesters dead.

Javier Velasquez Quesquen, the president of the Congress, becomes Garcia's third prime minister in less than a year. The previous Cabinet chief, Yehude Simon, was widely blamed for failed negotiations with indigenous protesters that led to last month's killings in the northwestern city of Bagua.

Garcia said his new Cabinet's main task will be to restore social order and assure inclusion for all Peruvians. The ministers of interior, defense, justice and labor and agriculture also were replaced, and Foreign Commerce Secretary Mercedes Araoz became minister of production.

Last month's violence started when national police attacked a roadblock near Bagua. About 2,500 indigenous people had blocked the main road to protest measures the government has taken to sell land to energy companies and other businesses. Indians native to the area say that is their land even though they don't have formal property titles.
