Baghdad drive-by shooting marks 3rd day of attacksPosted: 07:33 AM ET
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) - A drive-by shooting in Baghdad Friday marked the third straight day of attacks across the country that have killed 75 people, officials said. Gunmen in a speeding car in western Baghdad opened fire on a checkpoint run by the Sons of Iraq, killing two of their members, an Interior Ministry official told CNN. The Sons of Iraq, also known as Awakening Councils, are made up of mainly former Sunni insurgents who turned on groups like al Qaeda in Iraq. The Sunni militias created by the U.S. military over the past two years are credited with being one of the major factors behind the drop in overall violence in Iraq. In addition to the 75 people killed, 202 people have been wounded in the series of attacks that began Wednesday. |
