Posted: 08:15 PM ET

(CNN) - A privately owned jet crashed in southern California on Saturday, killing both people on board, local and federal authorities told CNN.

Authorities said the plane, an Aero Vodochody L-29, crashed near the airport at Tehachapi, California - about 110 miles north of Los Angeles - at about 1:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET).

The crash resulted in a fire that threatened five houses in the area, the blaze was ultimately extinguished, Sean Collins, spokesman for the Kern County fire department, told CNN.

The identities of the crash victims were not immediately known. No ground injuries were reported, said Josh Cawtha, an aviation accident investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board.

During the 1960s, the L-29 was the model used by Eastern bloc air forces as a standard jet trainer in the region.
