Trial date set for imprisoned Baha'i leaders in IranPosted: 07:02 AM ET
(CNN) - A July 11 trial date has been set for seven imprisoned Iranian Baha'i leaders, according to a news release from the religious group - enduring systematic persecution in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution. The seven - held for more than a year "without formal charges or access to their attorneys" - have been accused of "espionage for Israel, insulting religious sanctities and propaganda against the Islamic Republic." The group said the espionage charge "is punishable by death." Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi has been representing the seven. The Baha'i faith is a religion that originated in 19th-century Persia but which Iran does not recognize. |
