Four Guantanamo detainees resettled in BermudaPosted: 09:59 AM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Four Chinese nationals of Uighur ethnicity held at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility have been resettled in Bermuda, the Justice Department said Thursday. They were among 17 Uighur detainees at the facility set up to hold terror suspects. President Barack Obama has pledged to close the Guantanamo facility, raising questions of what will happen to the more than 200 remaining detainees. A political backlash against bringing any of the detainees to the United States has increased the focus on sending them to other countries. A Justice Department statement said the four Uighurs resettled to Bermuda had been cleared for release by the Bush administration. Another review of their case this year cleared them for release, the statement said. Uighurs are a Muslim minority from the Xinjiang province of far-west China. The Uighurs at Guantanamo Bay were apprehended in Pakistan, the Justice Department said. |
