4.7 quake shakes S.CaliforniaPosted: 05:08 AM ET
LOS ANGELES, California - A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hit the Los Angeles area Sunday night, but there are no reports of major damage or injuries. The quake struck about 8:40 p.m. local time, a mile east of Lennox and 10 miles southwest of the Los Angeles Convention Center, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. "The earthquake happened eight miles below the surface of the earth," said Lucy Jones of the USGS at Caltech. "That's a little deep for this area." There were at least two aftershocks, she said. Many area residents reported feeling the initial quake. Karsten Meyer told CNN affiliate KABC-TV that he saw the street lights shaking as he sat outside a Starbucks on Ventura Boulevard. "I looked up to the lamp post and saw it going back and forth," he said. – CNN's Janet DiGiacomo contributed to this report. |
