Cardinal's home bombed in Bolivia

Posted: 08:33 AM ET

LA PAZ, Bolivia (CNN) - A Catholic cardinal's house in Bolivia was bombed Wednesday, causing minor damage and injuring no one, news reports said.

Cardinal Julio Terrazas was not home in the overnight attack, La Prensa newspaper said on its web site. Two youths and a woman who were inside when the bomb went off at 12:30 a.m. were not injured, La Prensa said.

Video of the cardinal's house shown on CNN affiliate Unitel showed part of a brown wooden wall in the front of the house had been blown away, littering the driveway with wooden fragments.

No arrests had been made but news reports said three men and a woman seen in a car in the neighborhood shortly before the bombing were being sought for questioning.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack and authorities did not disclose any possible motive.

Bolivian President Evo Morales, who won approval from Congress on Tuesday to run for re-election in December, has been a harsh critic of the Catholic Church in Bolivia.

Speaking in Brazil in February, Morales said the church in Bolivia is the "main enemy" of the reforms his government wants to implement and that the church needs to be replaced, the Catholic News Agency reported.

Terrazas, 73, was appointed cardinal in 2001.
