Journalist freed after 146 days in captivity

Posted: 11:01 AM ET

(CNN) - A free-lance photographer has been freed after 146 days in
captivity in Somalia, a journalists' organization said Friday.

The Somali photographer, Abdifatah Mohamed Elmi, was freed Thursday night
along with two drivers, according to a statement from the National Union of
Somali Journalists.

There was no word, however, on the fate of two Western journalists who
were kidnapped with Elmi, the statement said. Amanda Lindout of Canada and
Nigel Brenan of Australia were abducted with Elmi and the drivers on August 23.

"We are very pleased that our colleague Abdifatah Mohamed Elmi was
released unhurt and in good health," the union said, but "we remain
tremendously concerned over the destiny of our colleagues Amanda Lindout and
Nigel Brenan."

Somali is the seventh most deadly nation in the world for journalists,
according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Members of the news media
work under duress there amid a war between a weak transitional government and
insurgents, the committee said, and 10 Somali journalists have been killed in
the last two years.
