(CNN) - Former football great O.J. Simpson, convicted on charges including armed robbery and kidnapping, was "clearly ... not using good judgment," his defense attorney says in court filings, but deserves leniency in sentencing as he is a first-time offender who showed no criminal intent.

Simpson faces a maximum sentence of up to life. A presentencing report recommends that he be sentenced to 18 years.

A jury on October 3 convicted Simpson, 61, and co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart on 12 charges, including conspiracy to commit a crime, robbery, assault and kidnapping with a deadly weapon.
