European markets down after Asia slumpsPosted: 04:24 AM ET
(CNN) - Major European markets opened down Monday following slumps across most of Asia, where only Hong Kong made gains among major indices. Germany's DAX index dropped nearly 2.1 percent in early trading, with the French CAC down about 1.5 percent and Britain's FTSE off nearly 1.4 percent. In Tokyo, Japan's Nikkei 225 ended the day down about 1.4 percent. Australia's All Ordinaries index closed about 1.5 percent lower, but the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong gained about 1.6 percent. In South Korea, Seoul's Kospi index ended about 1.6 percent lower after gains earlier in the day, while the Straits Times index in Singapore was down more than 2 percent in late afternoon. In Mumbai, the BSE gave up earlier gains to dip about 2 percent by mid-afternoon Monday, two days after the end of a terrorist siege in India's financial capital that left more than 180 dead. Trading was closed on Thursday due to the attacks, which targeted two high-profile hotels and several other locations, but resumed Friday. |
