Quake hits Indonesian coastPosted: 11:46 AM ET
(CNN) - A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck just off the coast of southern Sumatra, Indonesia, on Saturday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a "destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data." The quake occurred at 11:01 p.m. (11:01 a.m. ET), the USGS said. It was centered about 147 km (91 miles) west-southwest of Bengkulu, Sumatra, and some 671 km (417 miles) from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. The earthquake's epicenter was 4.7 km (2.9 miles) below the Earth's surface. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground. |
