Residents returning to L.A. mobile home park engulfed by fire

Posted: 01:45 PM ET

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) - Firefighters in southern California said
Tuesday they were gaining control over three wildfires that have scorched a
total of more than 42,000 acres and destroyed more than 800 structures,
including hundreds of homes - most in a mobile home park in suburban Los
Angeles.

Residents of the Oakridge Mobile Home Park in the Sylmark district will
be allowed back to their homes on Tuesday, where they will attempt to salvage
any belongings after flames whipped by winds of up to 70 mph (112 kph) swept
through.Authorities have said they believe all the residents of the park
evacuated as the fire approached, and no human remains were found there, but
166 residents remain unaccounted for, and officials were attempting to
ascertain their whereabouts and ensure their safety.

The blaze, known as the Sayre Fire, was 70 percent contained as of
Tuesday, but not before it scorched some 11,207 acres, destroyed 519
structures, including the mobile homes, and 104 outbuildings and damaged 16
additional buildings. Five firefighters and one civilian sustained minor
injuries.
