ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) — A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden truck into a paramilitary forces base in northwest Pakistan Sunday, killing at least eight troops, the army said.

The attack occurred near Wana in South Waziristan, part of the swath of tribal areas along the country’s border with Afghanistan that intelligence officials consider a haven for militants.

The victims were members of the Frontier Corps, a paramilitary force that uses recruits from Pakistan’s tribal areas and is overseen by Pakistani army officers.

General Athar Abbas, a spokesman for the Pakistani Army, said the truck tried to enter the baseĀ  but soldiers stopped it at a checkpoint before it could do so.

In addition to the casualties, the blast wounded two other troops, Abbas said.

Many Corps members have been deployed to the tribal regions to combat militants who are accused of launching attacks not just in Pakistan but also across the border in Afghanistan.
