$7.8 M needed for Pakistan quakePosted: 03:45 AM ET
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) - The Red Cross is asking for $7.8 million in emergency funds to help the victims of a deadly earthquake in southwest Pakistan. The organization said its priority is to provide shelter to the thousands of residents left homeless as winter sets in. The 6.4-magnitude quake, which struck Wednesday, killed at least 215 people in a remote area of Balochistan. It also reduced between 80 to 90 percent of the mud-and-timber houses to rubble, the International Committee of the Red Cross said. The number of wounded remain unclear. But the organization's estimate said the quake affected 20,000 to 30,000 people. Although it has not started snowing yet, the temperature in the affected region - located 6,500 to 8,200 feet (2,000 to 2,500 meters) above sea level - drop below 32F (0 C) at night, the ICRC said. |
