Tibet quake toll lowered to 9; hundreds homelessPosted: 09:35 AM ET
BEIJING, China (CNN) - Chinese authorities on Tuesday lowered the death toll from a strong earthquake that struck Tibet a day earlier, reporting that nine people - not 30 - died in the temblor. The initial toll was inaccurate because it came from "unauthoritative sources," China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Another 19 people were injured in the quake, which destroyed 147 homes, according to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs. Tents have been dispatched to the quake zone for the hundreds of people left homeless. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at 6.4 in magnitude, but Chinese authorities said it measured 6.6. China's Earthquake Administration normally uses the Richter scale to measure quake intensity rather than magnitude. |
