Quake toll lowered to 9Posted: 11:15 PM ET
(CNN) – An earthquake that struck Tibet on Monday killed nine people - fewer than authorities originally reported, China's state-run media reported. Initial reports said the quake killed 30 people. That toll was inaccurate because it used "unauthoritative sources," the Xinhua news agency reported. The 6.6 magnitude quake hit about 4:30 p.m. Monday (4:30 a.m. ET),. It was centered about 52 miles (84 km) west of Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. About 15 minutes later, a 5.1 magnitude aftershock struck in the same area, the U.S. monitoring agency said. |
