China to retaliate for weapons sale to Taiwan, official saysPosted: 03:57 PM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) –China is going to "cut off a number of military to militaries activities with the U.S" in reaction to last week's U.S. announcement of weapons sales to Taiwan, a senior U.S. official told CNN Monday. The Chinese ambassador was said to be on his way to the State Department Monday afternoon to protest the proposed weapons sales, worth $6.4 billion, which must get congressional approval. A number of programs could be affected by the Chinese action and visits by senior military officials to both countries could be cut off, the U.S. official said. The tension with China, the official added, will not affect the role China is playing in negotiations with Iran or North Korea over its nuclear program. |
