WASHINGTON (CNN) — China has canceled or postponed “several upcoming military-to-military exchanges with the U.S.” in reaction to last week’s U.S. announcement of weapons sales to Taiwan, a Defense Department spokesman said Monday. “The bilateral events affected involve senior level visits and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief exchanges that were scheduled to occur between now and the end of November,” said Maj. Stewart Upton. The Chinese ambassador was said to be on his way to the State Department Monday afternoon to protest the proposed weapons sale, worth $6.4 billion, which must get congressional approval. Upton said that the sale does not violate the Taiwan Relations Act, which allows the United States to provide Taiwan with items for self-defense. |
