ATHENS, Greece (CNN) — Greece’s ruling conservatives teetered on the brink of collapse Tuesday after the country’s beleaguered prime minister expelled an outspoken dissident for criticizing his government’s handling of a rash of scandals. The risky move by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis (kah-rah-mahn-LEES) came hours after lawmaker Stavros Dailakis (dy-LAH-kees) of the New Democracy party lambasted some of the prime minister’s closest aides, including Karamanlis’ chief of staff and government spokesman, for their role in a string of scandals that have rocked the government and dented its popularity in recent months. Since winning reelection last year, New Democracy has retained a two-seat majority in Greece’s 300-seat parliament. –By Journalist Anthee Carassava |
