MIAMI, Florida (CNN) — Hurricane Ike had weakened slightly to a Category 3 storm on Sunday as it bore down on eastern Cuba. But the National Hurricane Center said the storm — which had already devastated the Turks and Caicos Islands and was moving on a track that could once again threaten the U.S. Gulf Coast — was still a major, dangerous hurricane. The devastation the storm is capable of was coming clear Sunday as residents ofTurks and Caicos Islands, where Ike hit early Sunday morning, were able to assess damage in its wake. “It pretty much looks like an episode of ‘The Twilight Zone,’ ” said Audley Aftwood, a reporter for a radio station on Grand Turk Island. “It’s like the end of the world.” |
