MIAMI, Florida (CNN) — At least 73 people in Haiti were killed by rains and flooding from Hurricane Ike, relief officials said Sunday, as the powerful storm barreled into eastern Cuba on a course that could once again threaten the U.S. Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center said Ike remains a “major hurricane” despite being downgraded from a Category 4 to Category 3 on Sunday. It made landfall on the northeastern shores of Cuba at about 9:45 p.m. ET. The devastation the storm is capable of was coming clear Sunday as residents of Turks and Caicos Islands, where Ike hit early Sunday morning, were able to assess damage in its wake. |
