Boulders smash Egyptian shanty town

Posted: 10:40 AM ET

(CNN) - A powerful rockslide slammed a shanty town outside of the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Saturday, killing at least 13 people, injuring at least 25 more and destroying 35 houses, Egyptian officials told CNN.

Three large boulders fell from the Muqattam cliffs, overlooking the village of Bekheit in the slum of Manshiyet Nasr, just north of the city.

About 200 people live in the region, and rescue crews clearing rubble searched for trapped people in the area, struck by a similar avalanche 15 years ago.
