(CNN) — Gustav continued to gain strength Friday evening as it moved over the northwestern Caribbean Sea with sustained winds reaching almost 80 mph and showing signs that it will pick up even more, the National Hurricane Center said. Currently, the storm is a Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, the lowest intensity hurricane. Shortly before 8 p.m. ET, the storm was moving northwest at about 11 mph as it bore down on the Cayman Islands. Hours earlier, it had moved away from Jamaica, where it left downed trees and damaged houses in its wake. |
