Sex offender gets death sentence

(CNN)- A sex offender convicted for the torture and murder of a 9-year-old Idaho boy was sentenced to death Wednesday, federal prosecutors said.

Joseph Edward Duncan III was sentenced for the 2005 slaying of Dylan Groene. Duncan was accused of kidnaping Groene and his then 8-year-old sister, torturing them at a remote campsite after fatally bludgeoning members of the children's family, authorities said.

The disappearance of the Groene children in 2005 triggered a nationwide search. The girl was found with Duncan at a restaurant when he was arrested. Groene's remains were found two days later in the Lolo National Forest in western Montana.
