Russian lawmakers support independence for Georgia regionsPosted: 04:02 AM ET
MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) - Russian lawmakers asked President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday to recognize the independence of two breakaway regions of Georgia: Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Neither Russia nor the United Nations recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent, despite each region declaring de facto independence from Georgia. On Monday, the Russian parliament's upper chamber - the Federation Council - voted 130-0 for just such recognition, the council said. They acted after several committees, including the committees on foreign affairs, defense and the Commonwealth of Independent States, met to consider the matter. The lower house is scheduled to vote later in the day. Medvedev will make the final call. |
