MIAMI, Florida (CNN) — Tropical Storm Fay was moving across Haiti on Saturday morning after forming Friday over the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Sea, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm, the sixth of the Atlantic 2008 season, had maximum sustained winds of near 45 mph (73 km/hr) with higher gusts, forecasters said. Fay’s projected path would take it near the southern coast of eastern and central Cuba Saturday night and Sunday, the NHC’s 5 a.m. advisory said. A tropical storm warning remained for the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, the entire coast of Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the southeastern Bahamas and the Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba and Granma. A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area within the next 24 hours. The NHC advisory said residents of the Florida Keys and the southern Florida Peninsula should watch how the system progresses. |
