Lawmakers want Russian city removed as 2014 Olympic venuePosted: 03:42 PM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Two members of Congress said they will introduce a resolution calling for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bar the Russian city of Sochi from hosting the 2014 Winter Olympic Games as a means of punishing Russia for sending troops into Georgia. Sochi, a resort on the Black Sea, was chosen from among seven competitors that included Borjomi, Georgia, a town of about 15,000 in the scenic Borjomi Gorge, which is surrounded by Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. Georgia officials accused Russian troops Saturday of firebombing the gorge, and causing at least a dozen forest fires. U.S. Reps. Allyson Schwartz, a Democrat, and Bill Shuster, a Republican, said they will introduce the measure when Congress reconvenes following its break. Schwartz and Shuster, both from Pennsylvania, co-chair the House Georgia Caucus. |
