Bush: Russia's action 'unacceptable'

Posted: 06:15 PM ET

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Russia's escalating attacks against the former Soviet republic of Georgia have "substantially damaged Russia's standing in the world" and "jeopardized its relations" with the United States and Europe, President Bush told reporters Monday after returning from his trip to Asia.

"I am deeply concerned by reports that Russian troops have moved beyond the zone of conflict, attacked the Georgian town of Gori and are threatening Georgia's capital of Tbilisi," he said in the Rose Garden of the White House.

The Russian military advanced into Georgia on Monday, the Georgia government said, moving beyond the country's two breakaway provinces as Georgia called for an immediate end to hostilities. Both Russian and Georgian officials said Russia had entered Senaki, in western Georgia, outside of breakaway Abkhazia. But Russia has not confirmed any other advance of its ground forces beyond South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
