Accused Pakistani shooter in courtPosted: 08:55 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNN) - A Pakistani woman accused of being linked to al Qaeda and trying to gun down U.S. officers appeared in court Tuesday looking frail and pained by an apparent gunshot wound. Aafia Siddiqui wore a baby blue sweater and a burgundy head scarf and listened as a judge read her charges of attempted murder and assault. "I understand them," she said in a soft voice after hearing her charges. However, she did not enter a plea. Siddiqui's attorneys told the federal court in New York that she was suffering from a gunshot wound sustained in the July 18 altercation with U.S. officers - but stated that Siddiqui did not shoot at them. Authorities say Siddiqui shot at two FBI special agents, a U.S. Army warrant officer, an Army captain and military interpreters who unknowingly entered a room where she was being held unsecured at an Afghan facility. Siddiqui was behind a curtain and shot at the personnel with an officer's rifle, officials said. |
