LOS ANGELES (CNN) — John McCain would support a 16-month timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq — but only if military chiefs deemed the “conditions on the ground” safe enough, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee told CNN’s “Larry King Live” Monday night.

McCain said he would not stick to a “hard and firm date” suggested by Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Asked whether, knowing what he knows now about the Iraq war, he would support an invasion of Iraq again, McCain responded: “I think the world is better off knowing what I know at the time and the fact that Saddam Hussein was bent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction. … I think we did the right thing.”
