Briton, Dane die in Afghanistan

LONDON, England (CNN) - One Danish and one British soldier died in fighting over the last 24 hours in a volatile region of southern Afghanistan - Helmand province.The British Ministry of Defence confirmed one of its soldiers was killed in fighting on Thursday night.

The soldier - from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and attached to 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment - had been on a routine patrol near a forward operating base in the Sangin area of Helmand province when enemy fire ensued.

Six other soldiers were injured in the fighting - which occurred in a province that is one of the major battlegrounds of the Afghan war.

The Danish army confirmed that a soldier was killed and three others were lightly injured during military operations on Friday morning. The soldiers were engaged with Taliban militants when their tank ran over a roadside bomb or a landmine, a Danish commander told CNN.

In another incident, the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan said a service member died Friday "of non-combat related causes." The nationality of this person was not available.

These deaths bring the number of U.S. and allied troop deaths in Afghanistan this month to 28.

The number of Danish military fatalities in the Afghan conflict stands at 15. The number of British fatalities in the war is 112.
