Hurricane Dolly lashes Texas/Mexico borderPosted: 02:49 PM ET
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (CNN) - The eye of Hurricane Dolly made landfall Wednesday on Texas' South Padre Island, after its outer bands of driving rain and wind gusts up to 120 mph had already torn roofs from homes, flooded streets and sent residents near the coastal border of Texas and Mexico scrambling for safety. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said landfall occurred around 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT), just hours after Dolly was upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds at 100 mph. The system seemed to stall slightly in the Gulf of Mexico as the eye neared the coast at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT), forecasters said. But within an hour the storm had made landfall. |
