WASHINGTON (CNN) — U.S. officials credit Mexico’s Navy with a “daring” capture of a semi-submersible vessel being used by alleged drug runners, saying Mexican Navy personnel rappelled from a helicopter onto the semi-sub as it was underway in the Pacific on Thursday. Several crew members were captured and an estimated 7 tons of cocaine was seized, the officials said. The vessel was first spotted by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft, said U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen. CBP contacted a regional task force, which relayed the information to the Mexican Navy. A Mexican military helicopter arrived on the scene and a person “fast-roped” from the chopper onto the vessel, Allen said. He called the effort “daring” and “extraordinary.” |
