Schwarzenegger: Firefighter killed battling wildfirePosted: 07:50 PM ET
(CNN) - A volunteer firefighter recruit was killed Thursday while battling a wildfire in Mendocino County, California, according to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's office. "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Bob Roland, who courageously lost his life while protecting his community from the threat of fire," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "We are forever indebted to Bob's extraordinary and heroic service." Roland, 63, of Anderson Valley, California, died while working on the Mendocino Unit Lightning Complex fires, the statement said. He was a firefighter recruit with the Anderson Valley Community Service District Fire Department. Details of Roland's death were not immediately available. In his honor, Schwarzenegger's office said, flags at the State Capitol will be flown at half-staff. |
