Weapons seized in Iraqi operation

Posted: 12:27 PM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) - Iraqi security forces staging a major offensive in a southeastern Shiite city arrested a handful of insubordinate police officers and seized several weapons caches - including a significant pile of munitions in a cemetery, authorities told CNN on Friday.

Troops started an operation Thursday called Promise of Peace, a push against militants in Maysan province and its capital, Amara. The region borders Iran and there has been speculation that weaponry destined for Shiite militias has come through Maysan from Iran.

Provincial police spokesman Col. Mehdi al-Asadi said Friday that fewer than six police officers were detained by security forces for being "outlaws," a reference to their refusing carry out the orders of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
