Raid aimed at al Qaeda in Iraq kills 4; bomber kills 4 in attackPosted: 05:28 AM ET
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) - A coalition raid in Mosul aimed at an al Qaeda in Iraq bombing network killed four "suspected terrorists" Tuesday, the U.S. military said. And in northern Baghdad, a suicide attack targeting a U.S.-backed group opposed to al Qaeda in Iraq killed four civilians the same day, an Interior Ministry official said. The suicide attack is the latest in a flurry of strikes targeting the groups of predominantly U.S.-allied Sunni fighters, known as the Awakening Councils or Sons of Iraq. U.S. and Iraqi troops have been fighting al Qaeda in Iraq militants in and around Mosul, the largest city in northern Iraq; it is said to be the last significant urban stronghold of the group. |
