Tornadoes in Kansas kill at least 2, damage Kansas State UniversityPosted: 03:46 AM ET
(CNN) - Reported tornadoes tore through northeastern Kansas on Wednesday night, killing at least two people, injuring numerous others and damaging several buildings at Kansas State University. The storm destroyed a wind erosion lab, damaged several engineering and science buildings and tore the roof off a fraternity house at the school in Manhattan, Kansas, said Cheryl May, the university's director of media relations. "Our campus is kind of a mess," she said.
One person was killed in Soldier, Kansas - about 50 miles north of Topeka, said Pat Korte, coordinator of Jackson County Emergency Management. Another person was killed in Chapman, Kansas, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the state emergency management agency. "The town took a direct hit," she said. The storm destroyed 60 houses in Chapman, she said. Another 30 suffered major damage, and about 30 received minor damage, she said, citing early estimates from the American Red Cross. The city asked for at least 12 ambulances from nearby cities and counties to help it tend to the injured, she said. |
