Reported tornadoes damage Kansas State University; several injured nearbyPosted: 03:22 AM ET
(CNN) - Reported tornadoes damaged several buildings at Kansas State University and injured numerous people in a city about 30 miles away on Thursday night. The storm destroyed a wind erosion lab, damaged several engineering and science buildings and tore the roof off a fraternity house, said Cheryl May, the university's director of media relations. "Our campus is kind of a mess," she said. There were no immediate reports of injuries, she said. The storm caused damage elsewhere in Manhattan, Kansas - home to the university - but the extent of that damage was unclear Thursday morning, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the state emergency management agency. About 30 miles away, in the city of Chapman, Kansas, a reported tornado caused numerous injuries, Watson said. "The town took a direct hit," she said. The city asked for at least 12 ambulances from nearby cities and counties to help it tend to the injured, she said. |
