NEW YORK (CNN) — At least one person was killed and firefighters were working to rescue others after a construction crane collapsed in upper Manhattan during Friday morning’s rush hour, a top city official said. “I’m not directly on the scene, but I can confirm that we have lost a life of yet another building collapse in the borough of Manhattan, and it is an absolute tragedy,” Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said. The collapse left a pile of wreckage at the foot of an apartment building at the corner of 91st Street and First Avenue, a heavily residential area on the city’s Upper East Side. The crane damaged a building across the street as it fell, gouging out a chunk of a rooftop penthouse and terraces down the side. |
