WASHINGTON (CNN) — The three major candidates for president issued a rare joint statement Wednesday, accusing the Sudanese government of “atrocities against civilians in Darfur.” The statement was provided by the Save Darfur Coalition, which also took out an ad in Wednesday’s edition of the New York Times. The ad shows the statement signed by Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama. “We stand united and demand that the genocide and violence in Darfur be brought to an end,” the ad says. The statement is largely symbolic and proposes no congressional initiatives. It is meant to pressure the government of Sudanese President Omar Hassan el-Bashir. |
