Barak urges Olmert to step down amid corruption probe

Posted: 10:54 AM ET

JERUSALEM (CNN) - Embattled Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, under investigation for corruption, must step down from his position or face new elections, a leading member of his Cabinet said Wednesday.

"I don't think the prime minister can run both the country and take care of his personal situation," said Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Barak is a former prime minister whose Labor party has a coalition with Olmert's Kadima party.
Olmert has said he would only resign if he is indicted on corruption charges.  He is being investigated for receiving illegal funds and bribes. But the prime minister - the leader of the country's Kadima party - says the money he received was for legitimate campaign purposes.
