USAID official allowed into Myanmar, but not his assessment teamPosted: 03:18 PM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Myanmar's military rulers allowed a U.S. government relief official into the country this week, but still refuses to allow his assessment team to evaluate the cyclone-devastated country, a State Department spokesman said Thursday. William Berger, head of the U.S. Agency for International Development's Disaster Assistance Response Team, arrived in Myanmar - also known as Burma - on Wednesday, spokesman Tom Casey said. The only reason Berger was allowed in the country was to take part, with other foreign government representatives, in a government-organized tour of the Irrawaddy Delta region on Thursday and Friday, Casey said. |
