(CNN) — Earl Wesley Berry was executed Wednesday for abducting and killing a Mississippi woman more than 20 years ago in the nation’s second execution since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that lethal injection was constitutional.

Berry, 49, was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. (7:15 p.m. ET) at Parchman prison, 15 minutes after the injections began, said Kent Crocker, a communications officer for the state Department of Corrections.

Before the Supreme Court’s decision, no executions had taken place nationwide for seven months.

Berry was put to death for killing Mary Bounds, 56, who was reported missing Nov. 29, 1987 and whose beaten body was found Dec. 1 in Houston, Mississippi near her car.
