(CNN) — A mob stormed the homes of elderly people accused of witchcraft in southwestern Kenya, burning 11 of them to death before the rioting subsided, police said Wednesday. The killings began Tuesday night in the city of Kisii, about 200 km (125 miles) west of Nairobi. When they were over, eight women and three men were dead, a Kisii police dispatcher told CNN. The mob began its rampage after a meeting in which the victims, who ranged in age from 65 to 82, were accused of practicing witchcraft. The rioters then stormed the homes of those people, setting them and their homes afire, said the dispatcher, who would not give his name. Another five people who had been targets of the mob were rescued by police and were in protective custody Wednesday, he said. No arrests had been made, the dispatcher said. |
