NEW YORK (CNN) — Olympic gold medalist Tim Montgomery was sentenced to almost four years in prison Friday for his part in a check fraud scheme, U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said. The former track star pleaded guilty last year to bank fraud, admitting he had “agreed with others to engage in a scheme to defraud numerous financial institutions.” According to Garcia, Montgomery, 33, had a hand in depositing bogus checks totaling approximately $1.2 million. Judge Kenneth Karas also ordered him to pay $375,000 restitution, Garcia said. Montgomery was a 2000 Olympic gold medalist and a former 100-meter world record holder, but he retired in 2005 after he was banned from track and field for doping. |
