Casualties result from fuel pipeline explosion in NigeriaPosted: 06:25 PM ET
(CNN) - A fuel pipeline explosion occurred Thursday in Ijegun, a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria, resulting in casualties, Lagos police told CNN. The oil pipeline blast occurred between 11 a.m. and noon near a residential area, which includes a school, policeman Frank Mba told CNN. He would not release numbers of dead and injured, saying, "We do not want to release some numbers tonight that will dramatically be different tomorrow." When the explosion occurred "there was a stampede at the school ... but contrary to some reports, no children were killed and none sustained any major injury," Mba said. "Some were admitted to a hospital but all have been discharged. At this moment, we are just trying to ensure no further damage is done." CNN's Christian Purefoy, however, said he had just left a hospital that was treating three injured children who were not being released Thursday night. An investigation into the cause of the blast has been launched, Mba said, but added he suspects it was accidental. |
